Can you do mixed media with kids? Of course you can! I did this one in my class (I teach a grade 7 which are kids in the age of 11). I used pieces of corrugated cardboard which were included in our new Dutch books at school and I felt it would be a waste to throw them out. I'm giving you the short version here of how to make them, but if you would like I can send you a Powerpoint with all the pictures which will enable you to teach it via a digital schoolboard. Just mail me.
I started out with a coat of gesso. Make sure when you use cardboard like me, that you gesso the backside first in order to prevent warping. It's very hard to flatten it out if you don't.
I used several lilac colours for the background and mixed some gesso in in order not so make it too dark.
Take some old bookpapers and draw a body and head of a snowman on. You can also choose to draw three circles from large to small in order to make a classic snowman, makes no difference. Cut them out and glue them to the background; then give them one or two coats of gesso, depending on how white you want your snowman.
Take out some design paper and draw on a hat; I drew a high hat but a snowcap would do fine as well. Cut it out and glue it down. Mix some light blue in with some water and make a shadow on one side of the snowman. take some bubble wrap, paint on white gesso and print onto background. Draw the face on, a scarf and a heart on it's belly. Paint in a ribbon on the hat and the scarf.
Paint in the nose and the heart and accentuate everything by drawing on black lines around all the parts of the snowman. I used a sketchy style, making stitches here an there. Finally I made some shading around the snowman using wax crayons. I drew a branche and stamped a bird with purple ink on the branch.
As a last touch I stamped some snowflakes here and there and made some shading around the image.
I hope you enjoyed my tutorial. Don't hesitate to email me if you would like the Powerpoint.
